On Tuesday, Baker Mayfield’s value was low enough that 30 teams didn’t bother submitting a claim for him when he hit the waiver wire. Two days later, he played well enough that it’s reasonable to wonder if he might be starting for the Rams next year.
Mayfield, after all, has had some success in the league. He put up top-10 numbers in the second half of his rookie season, and he won a playoff game with the Browns in 2020. With a couple of good late-game drives against the Raiders, it looks more plausible that a better offense and supporting cast might get him back to playing at a decent level.
For those in dynasty leagues, I think it’s fair to weigh whether Mayfield or Matthew Stafford is better prospect. Stafford put up big numbers in 2021, but he’s almost 35 and is sitting out the remainder of the season with spinal cord contusion. Stafford has taken a beating over the years and has been to the top of the mountain. Does he want to play anymore? And will he even get to make that choice (doctors might not clear him)?
To me, if I were making late-season adjustments to my dynasty roster, I would see Mayfield as a guy to park deep on a bench. I would consider making him my third quarterback (in a 12-team league). I would rather have Mayfield than Stafford.
I turn my attention to dynasty leagues every Saturday during the regular season, rotating between the four notable positions. Rankings assume a 12-team league, with owners holding the rights to players indefinitely – so you’re looking at 2023, 2024 and beyond, with younger players tending to move up the board.
