JuJu Smith-Schuster is headed to New England, and for about the same price tag as the receiver he’ll replace.
Per reports, Smith-Schuster is signing a three-year deal worth $33 million, with slightly over two thirds of that guaranteed. Meyers yesterday agreed to a three-year deal worth $33 million, with slightly less than two thirds guaranteed.
They’re similar receivers. Both are chain-mover types with limited speed. (Meyers four years ago ran 4.63 at the combine, contributing to him not being drafted, and I think he’s probably a little faster than Smith-Schuster.)
They finished with similar stats last year. Meyers averaged 4.8 catches for 57 yards in 14 games, with 6 TDs. Smith-Schuster averaged 4.9 catches for 58 yards in 16 games with Kansas City, with 3 TDs. If we’re using PPR scoring, that ranks those guys 30th and 34th among wide receivers among those who started at least half the time.
Smith-Schuster’s most notable work with Kansas City came in the Super Bowl. He was a key factor in the second half, when that offense came to life. In the final two quarters, he caught all 6 passes thrown his way, for 48 yards. And it was Smith-Schuster who breaking free to the end zone in the final two minutes, causing the game-deciding holding call.
Smith-Schuster will start for New England, but I don’t see him putting up big-time numbers or being their No. 1 guy. I think they’ll still be adding somebody else.
