Tua Tagovailoa, Dolphins Agree to Four-Year, $212.4 Million Contract Extension

The Miami Dolphins and Tua Tagovailoa have agreed to a four-year, $212.4 million contract extension, keeping the left-handed quarterback signed until the 2028 NFL season. The contract’s $53.1 million annual average makes him the second-highest-paid quarterback behind Jordan Love, Joe Burrow, and Trevor Lawrence ($55 million). Meanwhile, his average yearly salary edges Jared Goff’s value by $100,000.

Tagovailoa's contract extension includes $167 million in guaranteed money and a $42 million signing bonus. Meanwhile, his base salary ranges from $25 million in 2025 to $54 million in 2026. The former Alabama standout will also get a $750,000 annual per-game active bonus and a $250,000 annual workout bonus.

Tagovailoa was the Dolphins' top quarterback option after a Pro Bowl 2023 season, wherein he led the league in passing yards (4,623) and established career highs in completions (388), completion percentage (69.3), and touchdown passes (29).

More importantly, he completed a regular season after missing 15 games in his first three seasons. While available for all games, the Dolphins became the highest-scoring offense last season, helped mainly by their 70-point Week 3 output against the Denver Broncos.

Without an extension, the Dolphins would have paid Tagovailoa $23.17 million this season due to his fifth-year option. However, extending him allowed Miami to reassign the money to succeeding years.

Given a contract of this magnitude, the Dolphins firmly believe that Tagovailoa will be the quarterback to deliver them more success. He has proven to be worthy of navigating an offense with Tyreek Hill, Jaylen Waddle, Raheem Mostert, and De'Von Achane. Therefore, the next part of his growth is to deliver postseason success for a team that last won a playoff game in 2000.
