Commanders Sign WR Martavis Bryant

The Washington Commanders signed wide receiver Martavis Bryant, but the contract’s details remain undisclosed. The veteran wideout will have a chance to make an NFL return last playing in 2018.

During his NFL tenure, the fourth-round pick in the 2014 NFL Draft played for the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Oakland Raiders. However, his two suspensions for violating the league’s substance abuse policy affected what was once a promising career.

Bryant served a four-game suspension in 2015 after violating the policy for the first time. A year later, he was suspended for the entire season for being a repeat offender. The wideout from Clemson has 145 receptions for 2,183 yards and 17 touchdowns in four seasons.

After his first NFL stint, Bryant also played in the Canadian Football League, Indoor Football League, Fan-Controlled Football, and the XFL. The Dallas Cowboys signed him to their practice squad in November 2023 but didn’t make the active roster. The Cowboys released him and signed him to a reserve/futures contract before another release in May.

Martavius Bryant, 32, was the fourth wide receiver signed by the Commanders this offseason after Jamison Crowder, Olamide Zaccheaus, and Byron Pringle. However, he must compete for a roster spot, especially when Washington has Terry McLaurin, Jahan Dotson, and Luke McCaffrey playing the same position.
