Bills Place WR Chase Claypool On Season-Ending IR

ESPN NFL reporter Alaina Getzenberg tweeted that the Buffalo Bills have placed wide receiver Chase Claypool on injured reserve. The league’s rules indicate that players placed on IR before the season started could miss the entire year unless they are designated to return during the roster cutdowns.

The Bills signed Claypool to a one-year contract in May. Three months later, a toe injury has him on IR. It’s another setback to his once-promising career. After the Pittsburgh Steelers selected him in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft, he established career-highs in receptions (62), receiving yards (873), and touchdowns (9) during his rookie season.

Unfortunately, things went downhill for the former Notre Dame standout after that year. From 860 receiving yards and two touchdowns in 2021, Claypool managed only 451 yards and a touchdown in 15 games for the Steelers and the Chicago Bears the following year.

Worse yet, the player Pittsburgh selected as part of the trade that sent Claypool to Chicago (Joey Porter Jr.) finished seventh in the 2023 Defensive Rookie of the Year voting. Claypool delivered a miserable 191 yards and a touchdown in ten games with the Bears.

During the 2023 season, the Bears traded Claypool and a 2025 seventh-round pick to the Miami Dolphins. He didn’t do much with his new team, finishing with only four catches for 26 yards in nine games.

With Claypool likely returning to action in 2025, his career statistics stand at 183 catches for 2,351 yards and 15 touchdowns in 61 games (including playoffs).
