Tavon Austin Announces NFL Retirement

Wide receiver Tavon Austin has officially announced his retirement from the National Football League via an Instagram post. His last connection with an NFL team was with the Buffalo Bills in 2022. After signing in June 2022, the Bills released him two months later. They resigned him to the practice squad in August, but he was rereleased in October.

Austin shared in his announcement:

”No matter how hard you work or how badly you want something, sometimes God has other plans. I wasn’t sure if I was ready to give up football, and it has been one of the most challenging decisions I’ve ever made.”

The wideout from West Virginia thanked his coaches, teammates, and the NFL franchises he played for throughout his career. The St. Louis Rams selected him eighth overall in the 2013 NFL Draft, and he stayed with the squad throughout his rookie-scale contract.

After this, the Rams traded Austin to the Dallas Cowboys for a 2018 sixth-round draft pick. He played 21 games over two seasons with Dallas because a groin injury limited him to seven games in 2018. Austin also suited up for the Green Bay Packers and the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Tavon Austin will finish his career with 223 catches for 2,039 receiving yards and 197 carries for 1,337 rushing yards in 106 career games. Austin scored 25 touchdowns in nine NFL seasons.
