The Denver Broncos and cornerback Patrick Surtain II have agreed to a four-year, $96 million contract extension, which includes $77.5 million in guaranteed money. The $24 million annual salary makes him the highest-paid NFL defensive back, beating Antoine Winfield Jr.’s four-year, $84.1 million deal with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Before Surtain and Winfield held the highest-paid distinction, Jaire Alexander was on top at $21 million. Likewise, it’s a no-brainer to extend Surtain II’s tenure in Denver after letting All-Pro safety Justin Simmons walk away.

Surtain deserves this contract after becoming a Pro Bowler and a 2022 First Team All-Pro member under his rookie deal. During his rookie season (2021), the former Alabama standout had 45 solo tackles, 14 pass deflections, and four interceptions. A year later, he earned an All-Pro nod after finishing with 46 solo tackles, ten passes defended, and an interception in 17 games.
Surtain will lead an up-and-coming defensive unit featuring Zach Allen, Cody Barton, Riley Moss, and P.J. Locke. They will be tested during their season opener against the Seattle Seahawks.
