The Washington Commanders and guard Sam Cosmi have finalized a four-year, $74 million contract extension. The deal keeps the offensive lineman from Texas signed until 2028 when he turns 29. Excel Sports Management’s Ryan Tollner negotiated the agreement on Cosmi’s behalf.
While the breakdown of Cosmi’s new contract remains a secret, the young guard has been vital to the winning culture the Commanders are building. Last year, Pro Football Focus gave him an 80.6 overall grade after giving up one sack and incurring four penalties in 1,103 snaps. Cosmi’s grade breaks down to 80.9 in run blocking and 74 in pass blocking.
Those numbers indicate that Cosmi is thriving at his new position after struggling as a right tackle in 2021 and 2022. The Commanders have seen the improvement they sought from Cosmi, which made them confident in giving him a lucrative extension.

Cosmi’s new contract came three years after he signed a four-year, $6.62 million rookie scale contract with Washington after getting selected in the second round of that year’s draft. Meanwhile, his $18.5 million annual average makes him the fifth highest-paid NFL guard after Landon Dickerson, Chris Lindstrom, Quenton Nelson, and Robert Hunt.
In addition to his new contract, Cosmi and the Commanders' offensive line has a new marching order: protect versatile rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels. Cosmi will do his best to fulfill that role while lining up with other projected starters, Brandon Coleman, Nick Allegretti, Tyler Biadasz, and Andrew Wylie.
