Trey McBride

The long wait for a Trey McBride touchdown catch

Now Trey McBride, he is going to catch a touchdown, right? Eleven games in, we’ve seen a whole lot of catches, but with none of them resulting in touchdowns.

I don’t understand it. Between the 20s, he’s been the trusted security blanket, racking up catches – 61 of them so far. But when the team gets inside the red zone, they turn their attention to Marvin Harrison. Kyler Murray has thrown 12 touchdowns. Harrison has caught half of them, while McBride has caught none (even while catching 25 more passes than their rookie receiver).

McBride had a similar season his final year at Colorado State, with 90 catches with only one touchdown.

McBride does have 2 TDs (one on a run and one on a heads-up fumble recovery), but no touchdowns. That puts him in contention to finish as the most prolific non-scoring tight end in NFL history.

Checking the historical numbers, only one tight end has finished an season with more catches without scoring – Steve Jordan of the 1985 Minnesota Vikings, who caught 68 non-scoring passes. With another productive (and non-scoring) game, McBride could exceed Jordan today.

Only four tight ends have had 60-plus ball in a season without scoring, and oddly all but one of them has come from the last four years – McBride, 2023 Tyler Conklin and 2021 Cole Kmet.
