Jonnu Smith

Miami tight end shines -- again

I remember there being a preseason game where the Dolphins were going to Jonnu Smith early, with him catching 4 passes. Tua Tagovailoa played in only one series in August, and 2 of his first 3 passes were to Smith – they were looking to get their new tight end the ball. I wish I had given it more consideration.

Nowadays, Smith has moved up into the top tier of tight ends. He’s leading the Dolphins in receiving, with more catches than Tyreek Hill or Jaylen Waddle. Smith has caught 49 passes and 4 TDs in his last eight games (averaging over 6 catches per week).

He’s been particularly good recently, with 6 catches for 101 yards and 2 TDs against the Raiders, 9 catches for 87 yards and a touchdown against the Patriots, and 10 catches for 113 yards on Thanksgiving.

In the 32-team era, there have been only 14 occasions in which a tight end has gone over 80 yards in three straight games in a season. Typically guys doing this are big-time elite tight ends. Smith is on the verge of breaking into that group.
