Jalen Hurts Breaks a Super Bowl Curse

Jalen Hurts and the Philadelphia Eagles dominated the Washington Commanders in the NFC Championship Game, earning them a ticket to Super Bowl LIX. In addition to being the first Eagles quarterback to carry the team to two Super Bowl stints, he also broke a Super Bowl curse.

Of all the quarterbacks who lost their first Super Bowl appearance in recent history, Hurts is the only one to return to the big game since John Elway. The Pro Football Hall of Famer eventually won back-to-back Super Bowls before retiring.

Hurts and the Eagles reached Super Bowl LVII but lost to Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs. This time, Philadelphia is hoping for a different result to win their second Vince Lombardi Trophy and halt the Chiefs’ quest to become the first NFL team to win three consecutive Super Bowl titles.

Hurts silenced his critics during the NFC title game, completing 71.4 percent of his throws (20 of 28) for 246 yards and a touchdown. However, he had three rushing touchdowns out of 16 yards. It was an efficient performance from the Eagles, a team that converted three Washington turnovers into touchdowns.

Meanwhile, NBC Philadelphia’s John Clark noted that Hurts is the eighth quarterback in NFL history to reach multiple Super Bowls in his first five seasons. It’s a lofty company because other QBs on the list are Mahomes, Russell Wilson, Ben Roethlisberger, Kurt Warner, Troy Aikman, John Elway, and Tom Brady.

What’s more impressive is that he reached the Super Bowl under different offensive coordinators. With one game left in the schedule, Hurts will certainly give it his all to win the ultimate prize.
