Albert Pujols to Manage Dominican Republic WBC Team

With a Hall of Fame career in the books, former Major League Baseball first baseman and designated hitter Albert Pujols turned into managing teams. After leading Leones del Escogido in the Dominican Professional Baseball League, he will also handle the Dominican Republic squad in the 2026 World Baseball Classic.

Nelson Cruz, a former MLB DH and current Dominican Republic general manager, confirmed the official announcement regarding Pujols’ hiring later this month. Pujols had a successful rookie season as manager, leading Leones to their first title in over a decade.

Under Rodney Linares, the Dominicans failed to qualify beyond group play in the 2023 WBC due to losses against Puerto Rico and Venezuela. With Pujols at the helm, the baseball-crazy nation hopes to do better, possibly winning the competition for the second time.

There’s no shortage of players who could suit up for the Dominican Republic in 2026. Holdovers from 2023 like Juan Soto, Julio Rodriguez, Willy Adames, Manny Machado, Rafael Devers, Sandy Alcantara, and Cristian Javier could make a return. Meanwhile, Elly De La Cruz, Fernando Tatis Jr., Jose Ramirez, Luis Castillo, and Framber Valdez could join them.

Getting most of these players gives Pujols a massive advantage in 2026. Likewise, managing the Dominican Republic team will be a full circle moment for him after playing for the team in the first-ever WBC in 2006.
