Niners Trade WR Deebo Samuel to Commanders

Wide receiver Deebo Samuel is bidding the San Francisco 49ers farewell after he was traded to the Washington Commanders in exchange for a fifth-round pick. The transaction will be official on March 12 when the new league year starts.

The 49ers selected Samuel 36th overall in the 2019 NFL Draft. Niners head coach Kyle Shanahan turned him into becoming a versatile wide receiver, making him the only player at his position to have 20 receiving and 20 rushing touchdowns. Meanwhile, Samuel finished his San Francisco stint with 4,792 receiving and 1,143 yards.

Samuels will earn $21.7 million in 2025 and will work with former 49ers front office personnel and current general manager Adam Peters. Meanwhile, the veteran wideout will line up with Terry McLaurin and catch passes from 2024 Offensive Rookie of the Year Jayden Daniels.

Samuel requested a trade in 2022 after earning All-Pro and Pro Bowl nods. However, his bargaining resulted in a contract extension with San Francisco. Meanwhile, the cap space cleared from Samuel’s trade will help the Niners sign quarterback Brock Purdy to a lucrative contract.
