MLB.com writer Mark Feinsand reported that New York Mets catcher Francisco Alvarez could miss up to eight weeks in action due to a hand injury that required surgery. Alvarez summarized his reaction by sharing three heartbreak emojis on Instagram.
Given his recovery timeline, Alvarez could be back in action by late April or early May. Last season, Alvarez hit .237/.307/.710 with 11 home runs and 47 RBIs in 100 regular season games. In his first year with the Mets (2023), he slashed .209/.284/.437 with 25 home runs and 63 RBIs in 123 games.
With Alvarez sidelined, Luis Torrens will likely take over behind the plate, unless the Mets make a transaction to bring a new pitcher in. Torrens played in 47 games last season, slashing .229/.373/.665 with three home runs and 15 RBIs.
While Alvarez won’t see action on Opening Day, the Mets will start their 2025 campaign against the Houston Astros on March 27. New York’s National League team hopes to improve on their NL Championship Series stint against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
