Gerrit Cole to have Season-Ending Tommy John Surgery

New York Yankees starting pitcher Gerrit Cole will miss the 2025 Major League Baseball season as he undergoes Tommy John surgery. Medical experts recommended the operation after Cole underwent an MRI scan after feeling elbow discomfort during a Spring Training game.

Dr. Neal ElAttrache will perform the surgery, and the recovery period could last from 12 to 18 months. Cole’s injury is a significant blow to the Yankees’ starting rotation after Luis Gil’s months-long absence due to high-grade lat strain. In the other roster spots, Giancarlo Stanton has tendinitis in both elbows, while DJ LeMahieu has a left calf strain.

Cole shared his thoughts regarding this frustrating development over Instagram.

“Today, the most respected medical experts in the field recommend that I undergo Tommy John surgery. This isn’t the news any athlete wants to hear, but it’s the necessary next step for my career.

I have a lot left to give, and I’m fully committed to the work ahead. I’ll attack my rehab every day and support the 2025 Yankees each step of the way. I love this game, I love competing, and I can’t wait to be back on the mound—stronger than ever.”

Last season, Cole finished with an 8-5 record, a 3.41 ERA, a 1.126 WHIP, and 99 strikeouts to help the Yankees reach the World Series.

With Cole sidelined, Marcus Stroman will likely regain his spot in the starting rotation. They will still need another starter, as Max Fried, Carlos Rodon, and Clarke Schmidt fill out the remaining spots.
