Cousins quietly waits for his opportunity

Veteran likely will wind up starting somewhere

To me, it seems like Kirk Cousins is the quarterback who’s lying in the weeds. I think he’ll be starting somewhere, and he could prove to be the best of the offseason movers at quarterback.

Some patience is required. Cousins is currently under contract with the Falcons, who are maintaining for now that they intend to keep him as a high-priced insurance policy behind Michael Penix. But most likely they’ll either be trading him or simply cutting him loose. He’s due a $10 million bonus on Monday, which could trigger his release.

Right now, Aaron Rodgers is sucking up all of the oxygen as he mulls whether to sign with the Steelers, Giants or Vikings. But once he signs, I could see the Steelers or Giants turning their attention to the other quarterback who suffered an Achilles tear in 2023.

The Browns are also a possibility, and let’s not underestimate the quality of that team. Cleveland was terrible last year, but it was in the playoffs the previous season.

In weighing Cousins against Rodgers and the other quarterbacks who’ve been on the move, keep in mind that the Falcons likely will be paying almost all of his salary. Cousins at close to the league minimum looks a lot better when you factor in Rodgers (and his ridiculous drama) playing for perhaps $45-50 million, Sam Darnold at $34 million or Daniel Jones receiving $14 million.

Cousins was pretty lousy at the end of the season, but he says he suffered a shoulder injury in a Week 10 game against the Saints. After that, he threw 1 touchdown and 9 interceptions in his last five games.

But if we instead look at the eight games prior to that injury, I see Cousins completing 70 percent of his passes, with 16 touchdowns versus only 5 interceptions. He averaged 272 passing yards in those games.

If we zero in on that shoulder injury, looking at the per-start numbers in the eight games leading up to that point, Cousins was averaging the 5th-best quarterbacking numbers in the league.

Admittedly, I’m playing around with the numbers some here. I’m conveniently leaving out a lousy Week 1 game against the Steelers. And I’m leaving out rushing production, where Cousins provides essentially nothing.

But I consider Cousins to be a legit, starting-quality quarterback. I’m guessing some team – Steelers, Giants, Browns or Titans – will be happy with him.

There’s some controversy on that shoulder injury. The Falcons dispute that he was hurt. They kind of have to say that (would get in trouble with the league if they hadn’t listed him on the report each week), but Cousins also has plenty of reason to claim now that he was hurt. I will agree it’s possible he’s not much worse than the other veterans jockeying for jobs, but I’m not sure any of them (including Rodgers) are actually desirable.

I have no idea how serious the shoulder injury was. The week after the Saints game, he appeared on the injury report (shoulder/elbow) missing some practice time, but not enough to earn a "questionable" designation. There's no mention of anything in Week 12 or 13. Possibly he's just making excuses, trying to pump up his value. But if there was some kind of issue, with Cousins able to get back to playing more like he did in 2022 and 2023, he'll be a nice short-term QB for somebody.

My guess with the Rodgers situation is that he would really like to play for the Vikings …I mean why not they won 14 games a year ago! The NFC seems more wide open than the AFC too (there’s little chance that Pittsburgh gets past the 3-4 top teams). But unlike the Steelers or Giants, the Vikings have a quarterback they drafted in the top 10 a year ago who they might wanna see on the field. Aside from the humor value of Rodgers again following Favre, I don’t understand why Minnesota would want to have McCarthy sit another season.

I can't think of anything worse for McCarthy's longterm development than having Rodgers bring his circus to town. Surely the Vikings staff can see that as well.

Years ago, it was commonplace to see QBs drafted early but only seeing the field from the sidelines. Things have swung the other way more recently. And now, seems like you'd better play them the earlier the better. The 49ers learned the hard way when they drafted tTrey Lance (#3, I think), deemed him not ready, sat him down and sprinkled him in with goofball plays intended to take advantage of his (ridiculously unpolished) skills, then back to the bench for an extended time. And last I heard, he's sitting on Dallas's bench. What a waste of a draft spot. (And no, I'm not putting all of this on the niners' shoulders, he may have simply been a blown pick no matter where he was drafted. But for what it's worth, I was pulling for them to draft Fields).

I believe if the Vikings had any doubts about McCarthy, they would have kept Darnold. That would have been a much more sensible hedge than signing 41-year-old Rodgers.

It's like speed dating; you start w 10 guys 10 girls. When it gets down to the last two, the ugliest in the room, they look at each other, shrug their shoulders and say "ok, I guess you'll do". Last team without a QB takes Cousins

Can't see ARod and Tomlin on the same team. Giants and Titans will have new rookies. Cousins to Cleveland and Coach K seems likely if they truly don't have to pay him. I guess I see Russell staying put and Pittsburgh trying to trade Pickens for a shot at getting back into round 2 for a guy like Will Howard.
As for ARod, he'll be sitting on his couch on opening day waiting to see which team gets their QB hurt early.

ARod with a head coach deserving of respect, like Tomlin, makes sense to me. Maybe he’d listen to a guy who’s actually won a Super Bowl. That to me makes the most sense for ARod, plus the Steelers have slightly more of a win-now roster than the Giants or Browns

Reports suggest that Tomlin has long been a fan of Rodgers. I believe as accurate the stories reporting that the Steelers have made an offer to Rodgers. How exactly that would come together, I have no idea. Rodgers typically likes to do his own thing -- run his own offense. Try to work in something different, and the sniping starts. Whether Rodgers would be compatible with Arthur Smith, I have no idea. The Steelers, at least for now, have two big receivers who can get downfield. I have think there would be some nice connections on longer passes. But I'm not sure if either is crafty enough or experienced enough to make all the complex reads and adjustments that Rodgers will be looking for. He's had problems in the past working with younger or unpolished receivers. And Rodgers doesn't want to get hit anymore; that would be another potential snag with the Steelers. He gave them a "I'll get back to you" rather than simply taking their offer, which could mean he's hoping for something better.

This is just my guess, but for whatever reason the Vikings haven't come out and said they're NOT interested in ARodge, so he's waiting on them since it would be a pretty cushy landing spot for a QB. As a Vikings fan, I would prefer they put this to bed and not monkey with his ego and the circus that follows him.

My 'WAG' is that Rodgers' agent is floating the 'to the Vikings' thing.

My other opinion is that Rodgers has hyper-evolved past the point where he cares about what any mortal beings such as coaches think. Aaron Rodgers in an Arthur Smith offense with two head case deep receivers when Rodgers doesn't like throwing deep anymore. My God, isn't that how the Big Bang started?
