The Chicago White Sox granted Joey Gallo’s release request a month after he signed a minor league contract with a non-roster invite to spring training. While the two-time Major League Baseball All-Star left on his terms, he’s hinting at switching roles from first base and the outfield to the mound.
If that’s the case, he will be playing a position he hasn’t delved into since he was in high school. He was the 2012 Nevada Gatorade Player of the Year while suiting up for Bishop Gorman.
Before signing with the Red Sox, Gallo appeared in 76 games for the Washington Nationals last season. While he is a former All-Star and a two-time Gold Glove winner, his performance during Spring Training made it difficult for the White Sox to keep him. He slashed .100/.143/.100 through nine preseason games with only one RBI. Worst yet, he’s had 407 strikeouts in 1,002 plate appearances since 2022.

Even if he was relegated to first base, the White Sox have qualified players like Luis Robert Jr. and Andrew Vaughn who can fill the role. Meanwhile, Andrew Benintendi and Mike Tauchman could play in the outfield.
