While the Houston Astros still made the 2024 Major League Baseball playoffs, they were swept by the Detroit Tigers in the Wild Card Round. That’s disappointing, considering they’ve reached eight of the last nine American League Championship Series before last season.
Therefore, the two-time World Series Champions must regroup to reclaim their place among the MLB’s top competitors. Returning to that echelon would require discovering amazing players, and they may have found one in third baseman Cam Smith.

The MLB Pipeline account on X/Twitter pointed out that Smith has been on fire for the Astros in the Grapefruit League. In addition to hitting four home runs, he is slashing .419/.500/.871. While it’s difficult to maintain a hot bat in the majors, this performance is promising for his long-term prospects.
After playing for Florida State, Smith spent time in Double-A (Tennessee), A+ (South Bend), and A (Myrtle Beach). Throughout those minor league stints, he slashed .313/.396/.609 with seen home runs and 24 RBIs.
Still, it’s Astros manager Joe Espada to keep him on the roster. However, if Houston takes a flier on him and performs exceptionally well, then trading for him while sending Kyle Tucker to the Chicago Cubs would be worth it.
