With the slew of injuries engulfing the Texas Rangers pitching rotation, the team signed Patrick Corbin to a contract with a guaranteed $1.1 million payout. This transaction also relegated Jon Gray to the 60-day injured list.
In a subsequent report by the Associated Press, Corbin could earn more money based on his relief appearances and innings pitched. He could earn $100,000 at 40 and 55 frames and $150,000 for 70 and 85. Corbin could take home $350,000 for 170 frames, bringing the total incentives to $2 million.
Meanwhile, he could earn $100,000 for 35 appearances, $150,000 for 40, $200,000 for 45, $250,000 for 50, and $300,000 for 55, amounting to $1 million. Therefore, he could earn up to $3 million if he pitches 170 innings in 55 relief appearances for the Rangers. However, Gray’s return could end his playing days with Texas.
Before playing for the Rangers, Corbin suited up for the Washington Nationals via a six-year, $140 million contract. Likewise, he started his Major League Baseball career with the Arizona Diamondbacks. In addition to Gray, Cody Bradford is also dealing with an injury that shortens the Rangers’ pitching rotation.
