Dodgers, Padres off to hottest starts in franchise history

The Los Angeles Dodgers’ World Series title defense is off to a fantastic start. After winning their first two games against the Chicago Cubs in the Tokyo Series, they have won four more games, extending their record to 6-0.

That start ties their franchise's best, which they achieved in 1981. During that year, “Fernandomania” was rampant, as Fernando Valenzuela pitched an Opening Day shutout and won the Cy Young Award. Aside from Valenzuela, the Dodgers had other solid starting pitchers in Burt Hooton, Jerry Reuss, and Bob Welch.

Meanwhile, the Dodgers had reliable batters like Dusty Baker, Pedro Guerrero, Steve Garvey, Mike Scioscia, and Ken Landreaux. This time, the Dodgers have a formidable rotation like Mookie Betts, Will Smith, Freddie Freeman, and Shohei Ohtani.

Likewise, their division rivals, the San Diego Padres, are only one of two remaining undefeated Major League Baseball teams. They’ve won their fifth consecutive game via a 7-2 result against the Cleveland Guardians. It’s the first time the Padres started the season at 5-0.
