The New England Patriots and wide receiver JULIAN EDELMAN agreed to a two-year contract extension that will keep TOM BRADY’s favorite receiver in town for the foreseeable future. Edelman, 31, is coming off a season in which he caught 98 passes for a career-high 1,106 yards.

Factoid: New England Patriots

After trading for Brandin Cooks, the Patriots are sure overloaded at wide receiver. Julian Edelman catches a zillion balls, and Chris Hogan and Malcolm Mitchell are also viable players. Is there room for all these pass catchers on one roster?  more »

Factoid: Minnesota Vikings

Stefon Diggs caught 84 passes last year, but with just 3 TDs. What are we supposed to make of this? Are we to assume the low touchdown number is an aberration? When a player is catching a bunch of balls, is the correct course to project that will even out, with the touchdown coming the following year?  more »

Fantasy Index Weekly: Patriots preview

I’m not ready yet to say the Patriots will win. Atlanta has the ability to trade punches with anybody (I’ll take a closer look at the Falcons tomorrow). But New England’s offense sure looks good. The over-under is set at 59 points, a total that’s been reached only three times in the last 20 years.   more »

Fantasy Index Weekly: New England Patriots

New England’s offense probably will score 3-4 TDs, and just 3 TDs looks more likely. Pittsburgh’s defense has been playing pretty well. It’s allowed only 19 TDs in its last 10 meaningful game. Only two opponents in there scored more than 2 TDs (the Cowboys, and at Buffalo). The Patriots have a great offense, of course, but they’re going without Rob Gronkowski, who’s caused major problems for the Steelers in the past (including two games with 3 TD catches).   more »
