Patriots sign QB Zappe to practice squad

After the New England Patriots made second-year quarterback BAILEY ZAPPE a surprise cut on Tuesday, the young signal caller cleared waivers and he joined the team’s practice squad on Wednesday. TheMore Patriots also waived rookie QB/WR MALIK CUNNINGHAM but he, like Zappe, also cleared waivers and returned to the team via the practice squad. New England drafted Zappe in the fourth-round last year, and he had an impressive rookie season and even threatened MAC JONES for the starting job at times. Unfortunately for Zappe, he struggled in training camp and now appears to be far behind Jones. Less

Patriots cut backup QB Zappe in surprise move

The New England Patriots cut quarterback BAILEY ZAPPE on Tuesday in an unexpected move. Zappe was a fourth-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. Following the Tuesday moves, the only quarterback on the team’s 53-man roster is starter MAC JONES. With Jones struggling at times last season, some fans felt that Zappe might be a better option. Factoid: Mac Jones

When I posted a story about mid-round quarterbacks with upside recently and mentioned Bailey Zappe, a reader scoffed at the idea that Mac Jones' starting job was in any jeopardy. And he's probably correct; even though Bill Belichick has talked as if every job, including quarterback, is up for competition, Jones will likely be starting all season. But long-term? That remains to be seen.  more »

Patriots QB Zappe to embrace competition for starting gig

New England head coach Bill Belichick said last month that “everybody will get a chance to play” when asked about the starting quarterback job heading into the season. Last year’s backupMore quarterback BAILEY ZAPPE seems ready to embrace the opportunity. Zappe said recently that “if my opportunity presents itself, I’m going to take full advantage of it”. While MAC JONES is expected to begin the season as the starting quarterback, Zappe doesn’t sound content to just accept the backup role without a battle. Stay tuned, fantasy owners. Less

Belichick noncommittal about Jones as starting QB

New England head coach Bill Belichick raised some eyebrows recently when giving a non-answer about MAC JONES and BAILEY ZAPPE competing for the starting gig heading into the upcoming season. WhenMore asked about a potential quarterback competition, Belichick said that “everybody will get a chance to play”. Considering that Jones was a first-round pick and is the incumbent starter, and Zappe was a fourth-round pick who only played when Jones was hurt, it seems likely that Jones will start for the Patriots this season. Stay tuned, fantasy owners. Less

Factoid: Mac Jones

Bill Belichick caused some raised eyebrows this week when he was asked about whether Mac Jones would be the starting quarterback in 2023. "Everybody will get a chance to play," he said. Scheduletron: Updated strength of schedule

The Patriots and Jets were a few seconds away from tying 3-3 in regulation on Sunday. That said, I notice that these two teams both have favorable upcoming schedules.   more »
