Offensive Lines: Rough week for right tackles

There's not really a catchy term for the league's right tackles. They're not protecting the blind side (except for with left-handed quarterbacks, that is). They usually don't make as much money as the left tackles. But they're important, which teams discover when they don't have them.   more »

Offensive Lines: Texans Trade Ton for Tunsil

So anything noteworthy happen for offensive lines around the league since last week? Oh yeah: Houston gave up two first-round picks and a second-round pick for Miami's starting left tackle Laremy Tunsil. This moves Miami's line from 32nd all the way down to 32nd. Houston gets a decent boost.   more »

Offensive Lines: A Central problem

Left tackles make the most money and get the attention of the occasional book and movie starring Sandra Bullock. But the Center position is similarly important, for its relationship with the quarterback and involvement in calling out blocking assignments. Looks like the Patriots are going to find out just how important.   more »

Offensive Lines: Panthers tackle hurt! Quarterback, too

Panthers fans held their breath as a key figure in their 2019 season was knocked out of last night's exhibition game. Second-round tackle Greg Little suffered a concussion; fortunately he has two weeks to get cleared for Week 1. Question is which quarterback Carolina's offensive line will be protecting, with Cam Newton suffering a foot/ankle injury in the same game.   more »

Offensive Lines: Cowboy up

The Cowboys have hovered at or near the top of our rankings in recent years. They've had three of the league's very best players at their positions in Tyron Smith, Travis Frederick and Zack Martin. But Frederick didn't play at all last season, sidelined due to Guillian-Barre Syndrome, and the line took a step back.   more »

Offensive Lines: Ranking the league's centers

Taking a spin through the center position in this week's offensive line article, there's a concern with the guy who was recently made the league's highest-paid player at his position. Buffalo's Mitch Morse is in the concussion protocol. Morse missed 5 games due to a concussion last season.   more »

Offensive Lines: Blind side protectors

Time was the only players who made more money than left tackles were quarterbacks. Things have gradually changed, but it's still a highly compensated position -- nearly half (15) of the league's starters make over $10 million per year. One of those guys, Trent Williams, has a very uncertain future.  more »

Andy Richardson: Offensive lines and playoffs

There's a strong correlation between offensive line play and team success. Was thinking about that last night while watching the Chargers and Kansas City. The Chargers had one of the league's worst offensive lines as recently as a couple of years ago, and Philip Rivers was getting beat up (and struggling). Now, he's an MVP candidate.   more »

Andy Richardson: Updated offensive line rankings

The linemen left standing at this point in the season are a hardy group. Or a lucky bunch, whichever. Truth is that everyone is banged-up right now. The tricky part is figuring out which guys are going to be able to play through their bumps and bruises, and which aren't. The roundup follows.   more »

Andy Richardson: Updated offensive line rankings

The Saints have maybe had the league's best offensive line to this point of the season, but their depth will be tested in upcoming games. Terron Armstead will miss 3-4 weeks with a shoulder injury, so Jermon Bushrod will need to start. That's a concern, with the stretch run and the NFC's top seed at stake.   more »

Andy Richardson: Updated offensive line rankings

It's that time of year when offensive line depth gets tested. Players suffer season-ending injuries, but then there are the week-to-week issues -- sprained knees and concussions and the like. Recent weeks have seen the Bears lose a key starter, while the Colts have been a pleasant surprise.   more »

Andy Richardson: Updated offensive line rankings

Watching the Cardinals-Broncos game last night, you couldn't help but think, wow, that's a bad offensive line the Cardinals have. And indeed: they have a poor pair of tackles, they lost their starting center to a torn ACL in the preseason, and now both their guards are hurt. One of many issues for David Johnson.   more »

Andy Richardson: Updated offensive line rankings

Jason Peters suffered a torn biceps in last night's win over the Giants. Just a flesh wound, says Peters, and he'll be fine to play, but we'll see. If nothing else, it seems likely his effectiveness will be somewhat limited, with one's bicep muscle being kind of important to arm strength. Makes sense to downgrade the Eagles a little in the updated rankings.   more »

Andy Richardson: Updated offensive line rankings

It wasn't so long ago that the Raiders had one of the league's best offensive lines. Now they're starting a pair of rookie tackles, and it's a suspect group. The offense has been performing at a respectable level in most early games, but we'll see if it catches up with them.   more »
