Question
The Browns and Jets play tonight in a rematch of the original Monday Night Football broadcast. It came in Week 1 of 1970, with NFL and AFL teams meeting in regular-season games for the first time. What notable player the previous day was the first NFL quarterback to start and lose a regular-season game against an AFL opponent?
Answer
Terry Bradshaw. The first pick of the 1970 draft, Bradshaw started the home opener against the Houston Oilers and was underwhelming in a 19-7 loss, completing 4 of 16 passes for 70 yards, with an interception and a safety. Terry Hanratty (a second-round pick the previous season) came off the bench and threw Pittsburgh’s only touchdown pass in the fourth quarter.
