With Joe Burrow having thrown for 971 yards and 8 TDs in his last two games, it’s fair to say that he’s graduated from being an up-and-coming quarterback. He’s now one of the very best guys – not only for this year, but for the foreseeable future.

If I were walking into a dynasty draft today, I would be hoping to get one of four quarterbacks: Patrick Mahomes, Justin Herbert and Josh Allen. And Burrow; I think he’s in that top group.

I’m not sure how much difference there is between Allen and Burrow. Allen is a runner, which helps him today. But it also increases his injury risk; and is Allen going to be able to graduate into being just a true pocket passer? He regressed some this year, with his passing numbers falling across the board – completion percentage, yards, touchdowns, yards-per-attempt, interceptions.

Burrow has the best weapons of any of the quarterbacks in this top four – not only JaMarr Chase but Tee Higgins and Tyler Boyd (and Joe Mixon coming out of the backfield). But Burrow also isn’t without injury risk; he’s a more fragile guy and is operating behind a lesser offense line.

There are a pair of veteran quarterbacks who are elite producers right now: Aaron Rodgers and Tom Brady. But they are 38 and 44 years old. So in a dynasty format, they need to be discounted. Especially Brady (I can’t guarantee he’ll even still be playing in September).

Kyler Murray and Lamar Jackson are very good quarterbacks right now, but with their run-oriented games, I’ve got them behind those quarterbacks in the top 4. With both of those guys, I’m not sure how long that style of play can last.

Deshaun Watson is the wild card, I think. Get him in the right situation, and he’s a top-5 quarterback. But he’s got to land on a new team, and he potentially could miss about half of next year – the league has not yet weighed in on his considerable off-field issues.

My long-term quarterback rankings appear below. This is standard scoring, and I’m operating under the assumption this would be a 12-team league, with each team probably carrying about three quarterbacks. Teams would have the ability to sit on the rights to players indefinitely.

I’ve been posting dynasty rankings each Saturday, rotating through the four notable positions. To see other positions, use the “past issues” navigation tools on this page. With the regular season now coming to a close, we’ll be putting this series on pause until September. Those with a dynasty question about a specific player can ask that via the Mailbag, but the next full, deep-drive dynasty list won’t occur until the 2022 version of the magazine is published.
