As it stands, a record eight teams have multiple picks in the first round of the draft. That’s never happened before. And the number potentially will change, with teams moving around to get their preferred players.
In this arena, I think of the Bears, Ravens and Bucs. All in previous drafts not only had multiple first-round picks but were able to parlay them into multiple Hall of Famers. The Bears did it with Gale Sayers and Dick Butkus in the ‘60s. The Bucs in the first round of the 1995 draft selected both Warren Sapp and Derrick Brooks. And the Ravens in the first round of their first draft landed both Jonathan Ogden and Ray Lewis.
Since the move to 32 teams in 2002, 71 teams have had multiple selections in the first round, and the results of picks are listed below.
For these teams, five actually had also had a third first-round pick. For those teams, I didn’t list the third first-round pick, instead putting a black dot after the name of their second guy. Those five third guys includes David Njoku, selected by the Browns after they had already chosen Myles Garrett and Jabrill Peppers.
Last year’s first round started off with two teams that held multiple first-round picks – Jaguars (Trevor Lawrence) and Jets (Zach Wilson). For this year’s draft, the teams currently picking 2nd, 3rd and 4th also hold additional first-round picks.
