Tee Higgins The Only Tagged Player Without A Contract Extension

July 15 is an essential day in the NFL offseason calendar because it’s the deadline for players who received the franchise tag to receive contract extensions. However, Tee Higgins is the only one of the nine tagged players who did not receive another contract. Instead, the 2024 season could be his last with the Cincinnati Bengals.

Higgins is coming off his worst pro season, totaling 656 receiving yards and five touchdowns in 12 games. Those numbers may have affected his free agency prospects or his appeal on the trading block. But when it looked like the Bengals could not keep him, the salary cap's substantial boost allowed the Bengals to retain him.

A strong season from Higgins can improve his prospects of landing a long-term contract with the Bengals or another team. Playing at a high level isn't foreign to him because Higgins came off back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons before last year. However, even if he didn't get a long-term extension partly because the Bengals are gearing up for Ja'Marr Chase's contract, Higgins will still play a vital role in the Bengals' success this season.

As for the other tagged players, six received lucrative contract extensions from their teams (Joshua Hines-Allen, Kyle Dugger, Jaylon Johnson, Justin Madubuike, Michael Pittman Jr., Antoine Winfield Jr.). Two received new contracts after receiving the tag and getting traded.
