Quarterback Jacoby Brissett is nursing a right shoulder injury from a hit he took during the New England Patriots preseason game against the Washington Commanders.
In the first quarter of that match, defensive end KJ Henry sacked Brissett at the Patriots' 44-yard line. The impact forced Brissett to leave the game abruptly.
With Jerod Mayo taking over from Bill Belichick as Patriots head coach, he will turn to Brissett as the starting quarterback until they deem rookie Drake Maye ready. However, with Brissett's condition unknown, Maye might get a baptism of fire in Week 1 against the Cincinnati Bengals.
Brissett is on his second tour of duty with the Patriots after signing a one-year deal this offseason. His first stint occurred in his rookie season after New England selected him in the third round of the 2016 NFL Draft.

However, the Patriots traded him to the Indianapolis Colts for wide receiver Phillip Dorsett the following season. Before returning to the Patriots, Brissett played for the Miami Dolphins, the Cleveland Browns, and the Commanders.
Meanwhile, Maye showed flashes of talent that made him this year's third overall pick. In one drive, he completed five passes for 71 and a touchdown pass to Kevin Harris. He had another deep-throw touchdown to K.J. Osborn, nullified by a penalty.
