Factoid: New England Patriots

We know the Bears and Commanders are taking quarterbacks at picks 1-2 in next month's draft. Most are fairly confident the Patriots will be taking a passer at No. 3. But I think it's possible -- and maybe recommended -- that they take a wide receiver instead.   more »

Factoid: Bridge Quarterbacks

There was some discussion yesterday of the "bridge quarterback," the mediocre veteran (ala Jacoby Brissett, pictured) teams employ while they patiently develop a highly regarded rookie. My sense was that such things don't actually happen anymore, but I thought I should go to the files to be certain.   more »

Factoid: Mop-up men

It’s been a crazy year for quarterback injuries. Who would have thunk that the small group of quarterbacks who’ve been able to start every game would include four who were among those most reasonable to be worried about – Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson, Tua Tagovailoa and Jalen Hurts?   more »

Factoid: Sam Howell

Sam Howell took a beating on Sunday, with 9 sacks and 3 interceptions, including one returned for a touchdown. It was a great week for Buffalo’s defense. The Commanders, not so much.   more »

Commanders coach Rivera messin’ with fantasy owners

While most of the NFL and fantasy football world knows that SAM HOWELL is likely to start the season as the Washington Commanders quarterback, head coach Ron Rivera has yet toMore make an official announcement. When asked about naming Howell the starter this week, Rivera praised Howell but said that he still needed to meet with fellow coaches and “really evaluate” the situation. The Commanders signed JACOBY BRISSETT to compete with Howell, but it has been clear all along that the team prefers Howell as its QB1. Less

Commanders Howell sits atop QB depth chart heading into camp

Washington commanders head coach Ron Rivera said recently that quarterback SAM HOWELL has “shown us what we want to see” with OTAs and minicamp wrapped up for the offseason. Rivera confirmedMore that Howell will begin training camp as the starting quarterback for the Commanders. Washington brought in veteran JACOBY BRISSETT to compete with Howell this offseason, but the team seems to have more faith in Howell to lead the team heading into the upcoming 2023 NFL season. Less

Commanders all-in on QB Howell?

The Washington Commanders have insisted for much of the offseason that young quarterback SAM HOWELL is their guy. After the recent NFL Draft, the team’s actions spoke louder than words. TheMore Commanders did not draft a quarterback, as some analysts projected them to do in a draft somewhat deep at the position. Washington GM Martin Mayhew said of Howell afterward, “I’m happy with exactly where he is”. It looks like the Commanders plan to head into the upcoming season with Howell and veteran JACOBY BRISSETT leading the quarterback room. Less

Factoid: Jacoby Brissett

I’m not a big Jacoby Brissett fan, but I see the wisdom in Washington signing him. He gives them a veteran to pair with Sam Howell, and he was far better than anyone expected last year in Cleveland.   more »

Browns QB Watson returning to practice

Cleveland Browns quarterback DESHAUN WATSON is returning to practice this week, the next step leading up to his eventual return from suspension in Week #13 against the Houston Texans. Fellow quarterbackMore JACOBY BRISSETT will remain the starter for the next two games against the Buffalo Bills and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but the 3-6 Browns are fully expected to turn the starting job over to Watson when his suspension officially ends. Fantasy News: Short-yardage rushing

Jacoby Brissett has been better than I was expecting as a fill-in quarterback for the Browns. In general, he’s been able to operate the offense. And he’s been particularly good on quarterback sneaks.   more »

Around the NFL: Cleveland quarterbacks

The interminable wait for official word on the Deshaun Watson suspension continues. The trial balloon floated about in the last couple of days has been eight games, but we really don't know for sure. What seems pretty certain is the Cleveland passing game will be pretty bad until he's available.   more »

Around the NFL: Cleveland Browns

It’s looking more and more likely that Jacoby Brissett will be doing most of the quarterbacking in Cleveland. Maybe all of it. And that should have everyone wary of counting on much from that team’s pass catchers.  more »

Browns QB Watson to face “significant” suspension?

The NFL is reportedly getting closer to handing down a possible punishment to Cleveland Browns quarterback DESHAUN WATSON. The league is expected to argue that Watson deserves a “significant” suspension, perhapsMore up to a full year in length. Watson would likely appeal such a suspension, but the Browns could be headed for the JACOBY BRISSETT era either way. Although Watson isn’t facing any criminal charges, he is facing 24 civil lawsuits ranging from sexual misconduct to sexual assault. As a result, Watson can still be punished by the league for violating the personal conduct policy. Less

Around the NFL: Jacoby Brissett

It’s becoming increasingly apparent that Jacoby Brissett is going to start a bunch of games for the Browns this year. All of the bridges between the team and Baker Mayfield have been burned, and Deshaun Watson is facing a lengthy suspension. It will be Brissett under center in a lot of games (gulp).  more »
