Around the NFL: What rebuild?

The dust has settled after the major waves of the free agency period, and a couple of teams were surprisingly (to me, anyway) aggressive. Both the Washington Commanders and Tennessee Titans looked like teams in line to slowly build around young quarterbacks and draft picks, but instead they opened up their wallets for some veterans.   more »

Around the NFL: Gus Edwards

The Chargers let Austin Ekeler walk in free agency, replacing him with Gus Edwards. If anyone needed a crystal-clear message about how different the offense will be under Jim Harbaugh and Greg Roman this year, there it is.   more »

Barkley, Ekeler, Henry, Jacobs, Pollard to become free agents

Last offseason, the running back market devalued as some marquee names failed to secure contract extensions or were offered the franchise tag. Jonathan Taylor was the only notable running back who succeeded after agreeing to a three-year, $42 million contract extension.

Factoid: Free agent runners

There are a bunch of notable running backs headed for free agency, including Derrick Henry, Josh Jacobs, Tony Pollard, Saquon Barkley and Austin Ekeler. But I don’t know that there will be a lot of big contracts handed out.   more »

Around the NFL: New-look Chargers

The Chargers are going with Greg Roman as their offensive coordinator, and that has me wondering whether Justin Herbert will put up even top-10 numbers next year.   more »

Dynasty Leagues: Long-term RB rankings

The end can come quickly for running backs. And with Austin Ekeler, I’m pretty sure we’re at the end. Not of his career, but I don’t think he’s got another top-15 season in him.   more »

Chargers RB Ekeler dealing with ankle issue

Los Angeles Chargers head coach Brandon Staley said on Monday that running back AUSTIN EKELER is day to day after injuring his ankle in the second half of Sunday’s game againstMore the Miami Dolphins. Ekeler’s status for Wednesday’s practice is to be determined. He was unable to finish Sunday’s game, although he did manage 20 touches for 164 yards and a touchdown in the game. Breathe easy, fantasy football fans. Austin Ekeler won't be traded, and won't be holding out. He'll return to the Chargers offense that he's been putting up huge numbers in for at least another season.   more »

Chargers expect RB Ekeler to attend mandatory minicamp

Disgruntled Los Angeles Chargers running back AUSTIN EKELER was absent from the start of organized team activities to start the week, but head coach Brandon Staley’s expectation is that his topMore running back will be present for the upcoming mandatory minicamp in June. Ekeler requested and received permission to explore a potential trade out of Los Angeles earlier this offseason, but nothing has materialized. Early in April, Ekeler said that he had come to the realization that he would likely need to play one more season for the Chargers before betting on himself in free agency. Stay tuned, fantasy owners. Less

Ian Allan: Durable backs

Austin Ekeler and Najee Harris have both started all 17 games the last two years? Can we count on these guys to stay healthy? Or is running back simply an inherently dangerous position (with every player a substantial risk to have his season ruined)?   more »

Ekeler status remains unchanged in Los Angeles

Los Angeles Chargers GM Tom Telesco said this week that “nothing’s changed” regarding star running back AUSTIN EKELER, who is seeking either a trade or a new contract from his currentMore team. Despite speculation, nothing materialized ahead of last month’s NFL Draft, and it doesn’t sound like any deal is imminent now that the draft is over. As Ekeler enters his seventh NFL season, it appears likely that he will have to play out this season in Los Angeles before getting a new deal from the Chargers or anyone else. Less

I will be interested to see what the Chargers do at running back during the draft. Do they trade Austin Ekeler? And would they consider selecting Bijan Robinson?   more »

Los Angeles Chargers running back AUSTIN EKELER requested and received permission to explore trade options just a few short weeks ago. With the 2023 NFL Draft approaching, Ekeler admitted this weekMore that he might not end up leaving Los Angeles this season. Ekeler added that “the worst-case scenario right now" is that "I’ll have to play for the Chargers for a year and bet on myself and then be a free agent next year.” Proceed with caution, fantasy owners.
