49ers RB Mitchell injury “a little worse” than expected

San Francisco head coach Kyle Shanahan said on Wednesday that running back ELIJAH MITCHELL’s injury is “a little worse than a stinger”, which the team originally suspected. Mitchell missed practice onMore Wednesday as a result of the injury. But fear not fantasy owners, Shanahan added that Mitchell has “a chance at Sunday” – when the 49ers play against the Green Bay Packers. Shanahan also said that TREY SERMON, the team’s other rookie running back, was “on a good path” as he works his way through the concussion protocol. It’s tough being a 49ers running back. Less

49ers RB Hasty out vs. Packers

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said on Monday that running back JAMYCAL HASTY would miss at least the next few weeks after suffering a high ankle sprain on SundayMore against Philadelphia. Fortunately for the 49ers, fellow running backs ELIJAH MITCHELL (right shoulder) and TREY SERMON (concussion) at least have a chance to play in Sunday’s game against the Green Bay Packers. The 49ers are also planning to bring in a few veteran running backs for workouts this week. Less

49ers backfield hit by injuries again

The San Francisco 49ers lost their top three running backs to injuries in a span of five minutes in Sunday’s win over the Philadelphia Eagles. First, it was starter ELIJAH MITCHELL’sMore right shoulder, then it was an ankle injury for JAMYCAL HASTY, and finally it was a concussion for rookie TREY SERMON. Mitchell was able to return to the game, but Hasty and Sermon remained out. The 49ers are hopeful that Mitchell’s injury is just a “stinger”. Less

Factoid: Here we go again?

When the 49ers used their sixth-round pick on Elijah Mitchell, I jokingly suggested that we should all be keeping an eye on him. Kyle Shanahan’s track record with lightly regarded running backs, after all, is pretty stellar. With the first week of the season in the books, this is now looking a lot more possible.  more »

Rookie RB Sermon should have role in 49ers backfield

San Francisco rookie running back TREY SERMON has the vision, patience, and burst to be a perfect fit in Kyle Shanahan’s outside zone system. Sermon also brings a pass-catching dynamic thatMore has been missing from the 49ers running back corps. While RAHEEM MOSTERT is expected to lead the San Francisco backfield, he has had trouble staying healthy. Fantasy owners will want to keep an eye on Sermon as the offseason progresses. Less

49ers RB Wilson Jr. out after knee surgery

After an injury-plagued 2020 season, the San Francisco 49ers are off to a rough start for 2021. 49ers running back JEFF WILSON JR. underwent surgery this week on a torn meniscusMore that will sideline him for four-to-six months. Given the timetable, Wilson is likely to miss the first couple weeks of the regular season and could be a candidate to begin the year on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list. While RAHEEM MOSTERT is expected to be the starting running back, Wilson Jr. is expected to provide depth along with newcomer WAYNE GALLMAN and rookies TREY SERMON and ELIJAH MITCHELL. Less

Around the NFL: Jeff Wilson

We've talked a little bit about San Francisco's backfield this offseason. It's a crowded one, bringing back Raheem Mostert and Jeff Wilson, signing Wayne Gallman, and then drafting Trey Sermon (3rd) and Elijah Mitchell (6th). It's a little less crowded today.   more »

Factoid: 49ers running backs

San Francisco seems to have the most convoluted running back situation in the league. They drafted a pair of guys who have some potential to start, but they’ve also got some capable veterans.  more »

Around the NFL: Rookie running backs

If you were watching the NFL Draft last night, you might have been wondering where all the running backs were. It was a historically thin group, with a total of four selected by the end of Round 3. That was the fewest taken in the first three rounds since 2016, which itself was the lowest number ever. Disappointing for the key position in fantasy leagues.   more »
