The Eagles are getting Dallas Goedert back. They’ve activated him off injured reserve, and he’s going to play on Sunday. That’s big. He’s progressed nicely in his first two-plus seasons, looking like he’s going to develop into one of the league’s best players at the position.

Zach Ertz indicated as much a few weeks back. He’s in the final year of his contract and hoping for a new deal, but he said something indicated he thinks the team would rather let him go, transitioning to Goedert as their main guy at the position. They’re both good players, but Ertz is closing in on 30, while Goedert is only 25.

If I were walking today into a dynasty draft (with teams having the ability to hold onto players indefinitely) Goedert would start becoming a possibility about five tight ends in. George Kittle, Travis Kelce, Darren Waller and Mark Andrews have been pretty special tight ends thus far, but then I think we’re at the point where Goedert looks about as good as anyone else.

The rankings you see below assume PPR scoring. For the first-year tight ends, I’ve got them tagged with black dots. And I’m assuming 12 teams, so when you get into the teens, the decision-making gets more complex. At that point, you’ve probably already got a starting tight ends, so some consideration must be given not to what guys are right now, but what they might be in 2021, 2022 or 2023.

For example, I’ve got rookies Cole Kmet and Albert Okwuegbunam ranked 15th and 22nd. Neither one of those guys is a starting tight end today, but both have made some interesting catches in recent weeks. Kmet caught a touchdown two weeks ago and made a really impressive catch on a deep throw on Monday night. Okuegunam has come up big the last two weeks for the Broncos. If we’re just picking tight ends today, you would select Jimmy Graham and Jared Cook ahead of those guys, but they’re both 33-year-olds. If we’re looking further down the road, you might prefer the young guys.

Of course, at the same time we need to balance the reality that fantasy teams can also address the future later on. Teams are constantly adding and dropping players, so there will be time to find 2021 and 2022 starters later on. Blake Jarwin, for example, is out for the year; he might be available on the waiver wire (available to be claimed by anyone in December).

Anyway, this is a stab at it.

I’ve added a new column this time. It shows where the player ranked last time. (I’m doing one position each week, so I last did tight ends four weeks ago).

Next week: wide receivers.
