Saquon Barkley had a historic, all-time season last year. With that in mind, it was surprising how bad he was in short-yardage and goal-line situations.
This hardly derailed the Eagles offense of course. With their Tush Push, Jalen Hurts was one of the best short-yardage in the league, helping him run for 14 touchdowns.
But I would have thought that Barkley – a 232-pounder operating behind that same line – would have been more effective with his carries in those situations.
Instead, Barkley was about the worst short-yardage runner in the league. There were 40 players last year who carried the ball at least 10 times when their team needed 1 yard to either score or to keep a drive alive (on third or fourth down). Of those 40, Barkley had the lowest success rate.
Just 3 out of 11 for Barkley in those situations. Only four other players (with at least 10 attempts) failed to convert over half of their chances.
Hurts converted 30 of his 39 such attempts. I don’t think there’s any doubt that when the Eagles are near the goal line in 2025, Hurts will be getting the vast majority of those carries.
