Around the NFL: Green light for Jones

The Patriots uncorked the first big move of the roster cutdowns, releasing Cam Newton. Mac Jones played well enough in the preseason that it was pretty clear he’d be taking over sooner rather than later, but now Jones can be evaluated on equal footing with the other quarterbacks. Barring injury, he’ll play 17 games.  more »

COVID impacts: COVID-risk players

If a player is unvaccinated, it reduces his value for fantasy purposes. Not by much, but such players are more likely to be sidelined at some point for a violation of the league’s COVID protocols. It makes sense, therefore, to slot unvaccinated players behind comparable players who come without that additional risk.  more »

Patriots QB Newton to miss practices due to Covid protocol “misunderstanding”

The New England Patriots announced on Monday that quarterback CAM NEWTON will be prohibited from entering the team’s facilities and participating in practices until Thursday because of a “misunderstanding” regarding offsite Covid-19 tests. With Newton out, the majority of practice reps will go to rookie quarterback MAC JONES.

Around the NFL: Cam Newton

Cam Newton won’t return to practice until Thursday, perhaps giving Mac Jones a better opportunity to be a starting quarterback on opening day. Newton violated the league’s COVID protocols for daily testing for unvaccinated players.  more »

Newton, Jones star for Patriots on Thursday night

New England quarterbacks CAM NEWTON and MAC JONES both looked good in Thursday night’s rout of the Philadelphia Eagles, with Newton likely tightening his grasp on the staring job. COVID impacts: COVID-risk players

Over 90 percent of NFL players are vaccinated, but almost 10 percent aren’t. And those players are more at risk of missing games in the regular season, given the COVID protocol system the league has put in place. It makes some sense then, to discount those players slightly in fantasy drafts.  more »

Around the NFL: Cam Newton

Watching the New England versus Washington preseason football game last night, I started to think the Cam Newton era is probably just about over. The Patriots drafted Mac Jones in the first round in April, so he'll be starting as soon as he gives the team a better chance to win. That time might already be here.   more »

New England coach Bill Belichick reiterated over the weekend that veteran CAM NEWTON remains the Patriots starting quarterback. Factoid: Cam Newton

I wonder if there’s some chance of Cam Newton turning things around. They’ve been talking him up some at practice. And he’s the one guy in the league who’s been able to pull off this kind of turnaround multiple times in the past.  more »

Factoid: Quarterback rushing

Following up on the Kyler Murray story I posted a couple of days ago. Murray suggested he'd run less this season, in order to protect himself from injury. That could happen, but most likely he'll still be one of the league's better running quarterbacks. Two years into his career, he's been one of the very best in this regard from the past decade, even if he's no Cam Newton (pictured).  more »

Newton has bone bruise, Stidham looking good

New England quarterback CAM NEWTON suffered a minor bone bruise in his finger last week that has kept him out of recent OTA sessions. With Newton sidelined, fellow quarterbacks MAC JONESMore and JARRETT STIDHAM have gotten extra practice time. Stidham has reportedly been impressive with his extra reps, while Jones has struggled. Around the NFL: Mac Jones

So Cam Newton injured his throwing hand on a teammate's helmet at OTAs yesterday. There was a small degree of intrigue -- would this launch the Mac Jones Era? -- but updated reports have it as a minor bone bruise. Newton should be fine; more reps for Jones at these early practices, but that's it.   more »

HoyerMore will join CAM NEWTON, JARRETT STIDHAM, and rookie MAC JONES in the quarterback room – making it highly unlikely that he will be of value to fantasy teams this season. Less
