Before the 2024 NFL Draft commences, a brief farewell to the careers of most of the 2021 quarterback draft class. It was a promising group -- there were 5 selected in the top 15 picks, just the second time that's ever happened -- but it sure hasn't turned out very well.   more »

Around the NFL: 2021 Quarterbacks

Before greeting the 2024 free agency period, a brief farewell to the careers of most of the 2021 quarterback draft class. It was a promising group -- there were 5 selected in the top 15 picks, just the second time that's ever happened -- but it sure hasn't turned out very well.   more »

Around the NFL: Trey Lance

Trey Lance has been traded from the 49ers to the Cowboys, and I like the move for both franchises. San Francisco had to move on from their draft bust/No. 3 quarterback, while Dallas gives up only a fourth-round pick (how often do you land a Dak Prescott with that kind of selection?) for a potential backup with upside. Win-win.   more »

Third string QB Lance likely to remain with 49ers

San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch said on Thursday that there is a strong chance that third string quarterback TREY LANCE will remain with the team heading into the upcomingMore season. Lance learned on Wednesday that he lost out on the backup quarterback job to fellow signal caller SAM DARNOLD. Lance returned to practice on Thursday and is expected to play in Friday’s exhibition finale against the Los Angeles Chargers. Less

49ers name Darnold backup QB, Lance absent from Wednesday practice

The San Francisco 49ers have named SAM DARNOLD as the team’s backup quarterback, ahead of fellow quarterback and 2021 first-round draft pick TREY LANCE. The 49ers are reportedly “exploring options” withMore Lance, who was not at Wednesday’s practice. While a trade is among the options the team is exploring with Lance, it remains to be seen what the 49ers might be able to get in return for a project they appear to have given up on. Less

49ers QB Lance down to third on depth chart?

ESPN NLF reporter Adam Schefter said earlier this week that San Francisco 49ers quarterback TREY LANCE could be down to third string on the team’s depth chart heading into the upcomingMore season. While Schefter acknowledged that Lance could have a productive camp after putting in significant offseason work, he also noted that there was no trade market for Lance. He also said it was significant that the 49ers acquired fellow quarterback SAM DARNOLD on the first day of free agency, adding that the team “really liked that guy”. If fully healthy, BROCK PURDY is expected to the San Francisco’s starting quarterback. Less

49ers QB Lance has been 100 percent healthy since March

San Francisco 49ers quarterback TREY LANCE said recently that he has continued to rehab his fractured ankle and that he finally started to feel better in March. Lance added that byMore the end of March he “was 100 percent” after originally suffering the injury in the second week of the 2022 season. With fellow quarterback BROCK PURDY still recovering from his own injury, the news that Lance has returned to full health is encouraging for the 49ers and fantasy owners. San Francisco also has veteran SAM DARNOLD on the roster for 2023, but fantasy owners have likely learned by now Darnold is someone that can’t be counted on for much beyond clipboard duty. Less

49ers QB Lance makes “substantial” offseason jump

San Francisco 49ers quarterback TREY LANCE has reportedly spent the offseason reworking his throwing motion and spending time working with star quarterback PATRICK MAHOMES. Lance’s private quarterbacks coach Jeff Christensen saidMore recently that Lance “just kept getting better” over the offseason, adding that the young signal caller made a “substantial jump”. The 49ers quarterback room will be one to watch this offseason, with Lance’s supposed development, BROCK PURDY working his way back from injury, and SAM DARNOLD somehow still hanging around. Less

Around the NFL: Sam Darnold

There's some crazy talk going around involving 49ers quarterbacks. With last year's late-season starter Brock Purdy having undergone elbow surgery and former top-3 draft pick Trey Lance having not been healthy himself, we're supposed to believe that Sam Darnold might start for the team this year. It's best dismissed.   more »

49ers expect QB Purdy back by training camp

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said this week that he expects second-year quarterback BROCK PURDY back in time for training camp, which begins at the end of July. WhileMore this has always been the hope and a best-case scenario, most did not expect Purdy to be fully cleared until sometime in late August. Purdy, of course, suffered a tear of the ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) in his right elbow in the NFC Championship Game and underwent surgery to repair the injury in early March. Until Purdy returns, TREY LANCE and SAM DARNOLD will take offseason reps during practices. One of the two could start the season opener if Purdy isn’t ready to go. Less

49ers receiving calls about QB Lance

The San Francisco 49ers have reportedly fielded calls regarding former third overall pick TREY LANCE. Several teams are believed to be looking into a potential trade for the 49ers young signalMore caller. It’s also worth noting that the conversations about Lance have resulted from San Francisco taking calls and not making calls. With former seventh-round pick BROCK PURDY in line for the starting gig this season, it makes sense that teams are inquiring about Lance’s availability. Purdy, however, is recovering from an elbow surgery that could make trading Lance a risky proposition. Less

49ers reach deal with QB Darnold

Once everyone is healthy, the quarterback room in San Francisco looks to be a crowded place. The 49ers have agreed to a one-year deal with former Jets and Panthers quarterback SAMMore DARNOLD. San Francisco hopes to have youngsters TREY LANCE and BROCK PURDY healthy enough to play at the start of the regular season, but Darnold provides another experienced starter in case one or both of his counterparts are not ready to roll in Week #1. Purdy had elbow surgery last week while Lance is returning from the broken ankle that ended his 2022 season. Less

49ers planning to move on from Garoppolo

San Francisco head coach Kyle Shanahan said on Wednesday that he did not envision any scenario where veteran quarterback JIMMY GAROPPOLO would return to the 49ers for the 2023 season. TheMore 49ers have two promising young quarterbacks, BROCK PURDY and TREY LANCE, returning from injuries but the team expects at least one of them back by the start of offseason activities. Garoppolo, who is recovering from his own foot injury, is likely to head into free agency where he could garner significant interest ahead of the upcoming season. Less

49ers QB Purdy to miss six-months with serious elbow injury

San Francisco quarterback BROCK PURDY suffered a serious injury during the NFC Championship game on Sunday and will likely be sidelined for about six months, according to multiple reports. Purdy hasMore a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow. Despite the long rehab ahead, the timeline would have Purdy back before the start of the 2023 preseason. Purdy was poised to start next season for the 49ers, or at least challenge fellow quarterback TREY LANCE for the starting gig. Time will tell how the injury impacts the 49ers offseason plans. Less
