Dynasty Leagues

Long-term QB rankings

Questions remain with first-year quarterbacks

With a month left in the season, I don’t think there’s a lot of clarity with the rookie quarterbacks. For those in dynasty leagues, Trevor Lawrence is probably still the No. 1 prospect, but not by as much as in the preseason. And there’s not a lot of separation between the others.

Lawrence has come pretty much as advertised, but he hasn’t actually thrown 2 TDs in a game since Week 1. And he seems to be in a dysfunctional, dire situation, on a team with a poor coaching staff and limited talent around him. Urban Meyer doesn’t look like he’s every going to be a successful coach. So if you select Lawrence, it’s with modest expectations for 2022 – you would be playing the long game.

Mac Jones is playing the best or all the rookie quarterbacks right now, but he has a more limited overall game. He doesn’t run much at all, hurting his fantasy value, and he’s on a team that at least for now looks like it will have a more balanced offense. If you’re looking for a quarterback who’ll win games, Jones is definitely the guy, but he doesn’t look particularly likely to be a top-10 fantasy quarterback anytime soon.

Trey Lance and Justin Fields, I think, look pretty similar to Jones for fantasy purposes. If and when they get up and rolling, they’ll be huge factors as runners, and those style of players tend to be really valuable in fantasy leagues. Think of Jalen Hurts and Taysom Hill. Lance and Fields could be that kind of player, only with more passing talent.

Zach Wilson has had a dreadful rookie season. At least for now, he looks like the least promising of the quarterbacks selected in the first round of April’s draft.

Below see my current top 50 quarterbacks for dynasty leagues. On this list, I’m assuming we’re in a 12-team league, with each franchise starting a quarterback each week and perhaps carrying two others as backups. Standard scoring. I’ve got the rookies tagged with black dots.

I turn my attention to dynasty leagues each Saturday, rotating between the four notable positions. To see previous lists, use the “past issues” navigation box on this page.
