Falcons turning to QB Ridder for Week #15 matchup vs. Saints

The Atlanta Falcons are inserting rookie quarterback DESMOND RIDDER into the starting lineup for the team’s Week #15 matchup against the New Orleans Saints. Veteran quarterback MARCUS MARIOTA has struggled forMore much of the season, and he now takes a seat on the bench as the backup to Ridder. The Falcons are reportedly excited about Ridder’s prospects, especially his maturity and leadership. Time will tell if Ridder provides fantasy value where Mariota did not. Less

Falcons to make quarterback change?

Atlanta Falcons head coach Arthur Smith indicated after Sunday’s loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers that the team would “evaluate everything” heading into the Week #14 bye. While Falcons fans and fantasyMore owners have clamored to see rookie DESMOND RIDDER replace veteran MARCUS MARIOTA, Smith has continually dismissed the idea of a quarterback change. Sitting at 5-8 following Sunday’s loss, it sounds like the Falcons are closer than ever to a possible quarterback switch. Stay tuned, fantasy owners. Less

Atlanta Falcons head coach Arthur Smith said on Monday that there is no quarterback “situation”, adding that the team will move forward with MARCUS MARIOTA as the starting quarterback. Mariota hasMore struggled in recent weeks, leaving many to speculate that the team might turn to rookie signal-caller DESMOND RIDDER. Around the NFL: Desmond Ridder

Desmond Ridder looked pretty good last night, making me wonder when he might get a chance to start for the Falcons this year. This team isn't going anywhere, and at some point they'll want to see what he can do. Recent history gives him fairly long odds of starting that many games, though.   more »

QBs Mariota, Ridder add dynamic element to Falcons offense

Atlanta Falcons quarterbacks MARCUS MARIOTA and DESMOND RIDDER combined for 82 yards on nine carries in Friday night’s preseason game against the Detroit Lions. After years of a stationary MATT RYANMore at quarterback, the Falcons offense could look significantly different this season. Fantasy owners, however, will need to decide which quarterback will lead the way this year. While Mariota is expected to start the season, the rookie Ridder looked impressive in his debut and could end up starting sooner than later if he continues to impress. Less

Around the NFL: Marcus Mariota

There'd been a report recently suggesting third-rounder Desmond Ridder would start for the Falcons, but maybe that was overly optimistic. A more recent one says that Mariota is "far ahead" of the rookie, which makes sense. It's probably good news for the offense, and its most desirable receiver.   more »

Factoid: Third-round quarterbacks

Three quarterbacks were selected in the third round back in April, and early reports have been good and bad. With Atlanta's Desmond Ridder, it sounds like he might push to start right away. With Malik Willis (Tennessee) and Matt Corral (Carolina), early indications have been nothing of the sort.   more »

Factoid: Later-round quarterbacks

A host of quarterback prospects got dissed at the draft, with Malik Willis, Matt Corral and Desmond Ridder all falling to the third round. That in itself is a pretty strong indication that those guys aren’t going to make much of an impact.  more »

Factoid: Atlanta Falcons

There’s been some chatter about Desmond Ridder maybe challenging for the starting job in Atlanta, but I don’t know that it really matters. I don’t think there’s any chance of Marcus Mariota playing the full season.  more »

Around the NFL: Third-round quarterbacks

Three of the coveted quarterback prospects finally came off the board in the third round, and I like them a lot more in that range than I did in the first. The expectations and time-lines look more palatable.   more »

Factoid: NFL draft

I have heard the suggestion that teams might be interested in trading up into the end of the first round to select a quarterback. But I don’t think it will happen.   more »

The Pittsburgh Steelers reportedly have meetings planned this week a couple of high-profile college quarterbacks as the NFL Draft approaches at the end of the month. The Steelers are reportedly meetingMore with Cincinnati quarterback DESMOND RIDDER and UNC signal-caller SAM HOWELL. Ridder and Howell are among the top quarterback prospects in the upcoming draft. The Steelers have MITCH TRUBISKY in place, but time with tell if they add competition with the 20th overall pick in the first round. Less

Factoid: Non-1st Round Quarterbacks

Recently I posted an item showing the track record of quarterbacks selected in the first round of NFL drafts. It's where most of the league's starters (good and bad) come from. Now here are the best seasons turned in by quarterbacks drafted outside the first round -- if drafted at all.   more »
