Lions RB Swift ready to roar for season opener
Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell said on Tuesday that running back D’ANDRE SWIFT “should be ready to go” for this week’s season opening game against the San Francisco 49ers. Swift… More missed the entire preseason with a groin injury that his coaches initially said could cost him reps in the regular season. Around the NFL: D'Andre Swift
It hasn't been a great offseason for second-year running backs. Cam Akers tore his Achilles. J.K. Dobbins, OK, he's fine, but the Ravens signed Gus Edwards to a deal that makes it clear he'll have a significant part of the running game. With D'Andre Swift, first the team signed Jamaal Williams and talked him up as the 1A. And now there's an injury issue. more »

Factoid: Veteran running backs
Mike Davis and Jamaal Williams look like key running backs. They’re older, lightly regarded running backs who haven’t done much yet as pros, but they’ve been signed by teams that are looking for them to be contributors. more »

Lions to feature RB Swift in passing game?
Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Anthony Lynn seems to change his plans for the backfield on a daily basis. After initially suggesting that newcomer JAMAAL WILLIAMS will lead the backfield, Lynn indicated… More last week that he now plans to go with the “hot hand” at running back this season. Lynn also suggested that running back D’ANDRE SWIFT could be used in more of a receiver role in 2021 because “he has natural hands”. Stay tuned, fantasy owners. Less

Thunder and Lightning to strike in Green Bay backfield?
Green Bay running back A.J. DILLON, a lightly used second-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, is expecting big things heading into his second season. With former Packers running back JAMAAL… More WILLIAMS now in Detroit, Dillon is expected to have an increased role along with fellow running back AARON JONES. Dillion sees himself as “thunder” to Jones’ “lightning”, adding that the duo “can be the best running back tandem in the league” heading into the 2021 season. Eyebrows are raised in Cleveland. Less

Williams to lead Lions backfield?
Wha’choo talkin’ ‘bout, Willis? While most fantasy owners have Detroit running back DE’ANDRE SWIFT atop the Lions backfield depth chart, offensive coordinator Anthony Lynn seems to think that newly signed JAMAAL… More WILLIAMS will become the primary tailback in the team’s new attack. Lynn said in a recent interview that Williams will likely be Detroit’s top tailback, with 2020 second-rounder Swift serving in a complementary role. Less

Jamaal Williams signed with the Lions. I think this will force Green Bay to use Aaron Jones more in obvious passing situations. That could be both a good and a bad thing. more »

Lions to carry on without RB Johnson
The Detroit Lions informed running back KERRYON JOHNSON yesterday that he will be waived today. Johnson, 23, was the team’s second-round draft pick in 2018. D’ANDRE SWIFT will start for the Lions this season, with new addition JAMAAL WILLIAMS set to handle the backup role. Around the NFL: No. 2 running backs
I wonder if the Packers have any misgivings about the contract they just gave Aaron Jones. Great back and important to get him back, but the running back market hasn't really developed. Seems they could have potentially let him test the market and then brought him back at a lower price. Most of the free agent signings have been No. 2 types. more »

Around the NFL: Aaron Jones
In a mild surprise, to me at least, the Packers signed Aaron Jones yesterday to a four-year, $48 million contract. It's surprising only in that Green Bay protect Jones from leaving with the franchise tag, making it seem he'd reach the open market. It's not surprising in terms of what Jones has earned over the past few seasons. more »

Green Bay RB Williams hoping to remain with Packers
Green Bay Packers running back JAMAAL WILLIAMS said this week that he would love “to be a Packer all my life”. With his existing contract set to expire, however, Williams added… More that he is prepared to head into free agency if the Packers do not offer a new deal. Green Bay is currently strapped by the salary cap and may let Williams test the open market before making a real push to bring him back. The Packers also selected A.J. DILLON in the second round of last year’s draft as a possible replacement should Williams or fellow running back AARON JONES leave in free agency. Less

Around the NFL: Packers running backs
Couple of recent stories on Green Bay free agent running back Aaron Jones. One (which I question) indicates he could command up to $15 million per season; that sounds high. Another that Miami could be one of the interested teams. Whatever the case, it seems likely that some team will offer him more than the Packers, and he'll be gone. more »

Rodgers, Adams, Dillon lead Packers rout of Titans
Green Bay quarterback AARON RODGERS threw 4 touchdown passes in Sunday night’s surprising rout of the Tennessee Titans. With running back JAMAAL WILLIAMS inactive, rookie AJ DILLON took advantage of his extended playing time alongside AARON JONES with 21 carries for 124 yards and 2 touchdowns.
