Factoid: Rookie QBs

There are some who believe experience is a key with rookie quarterbacks. Bill Parcells, for one, in his day preferred to draft prospects who had started at least 30 games in college. A pair of Parcells-type prospects were the most notable rookie quarterbacks last year, with Kenny Pickett and Brock Purdy both completing over 900 passes before they were drafted.   more »

Factoid: Rookie quarterbacks

Anthony Richardson hardly played at Florida, with only 13 starts. Is it realistic to expect him to step in and put up viable numbers anytime soon? Quarterback is, after all, the most complex position in sports.   more »

Colts veteran QB Minshew splitting first-team reps with rookie Richardson

Indianapolis Colts rookie quarterback ANTHONY RICHARDSON and veteran signal caller GARDNER MINSHEW are both taking first-team snaps for the team in organized team activities. The Colts are expected to give RichardsonMore plenty of chances and an opportunity to win the starting quarterback gig in Indianapolis this season. However, if the team decides that Richardson is not ready, Minshew provides a veteran presence with starting experience. Stay tuned, fantasy owners. Less

Colts release veteran QB Foles

The Indianapolis Colts officially released veteran quarterback NICK FOLES late last week after the first year of a two-year deal he signed last spring. Foles was brought in by former headMore coach Frank Reich along with MATT RYAN, both of whom will play elsewhere, if at all, this season. With Foles out of the picture, the only quarterback remaining on the roster from the 2023 season is third-year passer SAM EHLINGER. Heading into the upcoming season, Ehlinger will likely battle for a roster spot behind fellow quarterbacks ANTHONY RICHARDSON and GARDNER MINSHEW. Less

Rookie QB Richardson to start for Colts?

Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay said the decision will be up to head coach Shane Steichen, but he added that fourth overall pick ANTHONY RICHARDSON may start and play right awayMore heading into the 2023 season. A rookie quarterback starting the season opener is not the norm in the NFL. Only 10 of the 29 quarterbacks taken in the first round over the past decade ended up taking the field as the season-opening starter. But if Irsay is to be believed, and Richardson is ready, the Colts could have a rookie signal caller under center to start the season. Less

Kentucky QB Levis slides out of first round

Kentucky quarterback WILL LEVIS was widely expected to be a first-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, but the young signal caller was not picked among the 31 selections made onMore Thursday night. Levis had been projected as high as the fourth overall pick to the Indianapolis Colts, who selected Florida quarterback ANTHONY RICHARDSON instead. Levis’ left toe that caused him to miss two games last year was “problematic” for at least one team, although Levis insists that the “toe has healed”. Stay tuned to see when, and if, Levis is drafted later tonight. Less

Colts get their guy, select QB Richardson with fourth pick

The Indianapolis Colts have been searching for a quarterback since the surprise retirement of Andrew Luck prior to the 2019 season. The Colts selected Florida quarterback ANTHONY RICHARDSON with the fourthMore overall pick in Thursday night’s draft in their latest attempt to fill the void. Richardson is a player with the best physical tools the NFL Draft has ever produced, but he has little production to show for it in limited collegiate action. Less

Factoid: Will Levis

When the NFL Draft kicks off tonight, there's little consensus as to where Kentucky quarterback Will Levis will be selected. One wild rumor circulating this week has him going No. 1 to Carolina. No. 2 to Houston is possible. Another has him slipping out of the top 10 and being drafted by the Patriots. A polarizing prospect.   more »

Minnesota poised to draft Hooker as QB of the future?

Four quarterbacks are widely expected to be drafted in the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft, including BRYCE YOUNG (Alabama), C.J. STROUD (Ohio State), WILL LEVIS (Kentucky), and ANTHONY RICHARDSONMore (Florida). Young quarterback HENDON HOOKER is another signal-caller whose name is likely to come off the board sooner than later, and the Minnesota Vikings have been linked to him. The Vikings do not have a second-round pick this year, so they may need to draft Hooker in the first round if they think he could eventually take over for veteran KIRK COUSINS. Less

Factoid: C.J. Stroud

With rookie quarterbacks, I like to look at sacks. It provides some information, I think, about how good they are at recognizing pressure (or at least getting the ball out of their hands). And it looks meaningful with this year’s crop of first-round prospects.  more »

Around the NFL: Anthony Richardson

Bryce Young and C.J. Stroud have generally been the most talked about quarterbacks coming out of college. They put up huge numbers last year for top Alabama and Ohio State programs, respectively. But Anthony Richardson's performance at the combine yesterday was what people were talking about.   more »
