Andy Richardson: When to draft a quarterback

Earlier this week I posted a recap of a PPR draft I'm participating in, and a reader noted that quarterbacks went considerably later than his custom rankings suggested. At the time I noted that quarterbacks tend to go later in experts drafts, but it merits further discussion.   more »

Andy Richardson: Draft mistakes to avoid

I'm participating in a couple of drafts right now; I posted about one of them yesterday. It's that time of year. And no matter how many years you've been playing fantasy football, it can be good to take a step back and remind yourself of some basic (in some cases, very basic) things to do, and not to do. Here are 8 do's and don'ts.  more »

Andy Richardson: Justin Jefferson on down

I'm currently participating in one of the FanEx Experts Drafts, a slow draft that plays out over a couple of weeks prior to the season. We're into Round 11, and I thought I'd post a recap of how things have gone so far. Regrets...I have a few.   more »

Andy Richardson: Footballguys Draft

A few years back I stumbled upon the Fantasy Football Players Championship (FFPC) leagues, with their Main Event competitions and also Footballguys leagues. It is far and away my favorite league to compete in each year, and I've done pretty well, as an added bonus. My league for this season drafted last night.   more »

Andy Richardson: Is 1st pick the best?

I saw a Tweet from a fantasy guy I follow yesterday saying that if you have your choice of draft selection, don't overthink it, pick No. 1. I understand the sentiment, but I have mixed feelings about it. These have been strengthened by an experts draft I'm picking in right now.   more »

Andy Richardson: Best-Ball League

I participated in a best-ball draft last week. $35 entry, an online slow draft with a 2-hour clock at the Fantasy Football Players Championship at myffpc.com. Some people do dozens (or more?) of these leagues; I stick to one or two. I'm playing with house money from a previous win, so the goal is to keep the good times rolling.   more »

Andy Richardson: Experts Draft / Auction tidbits

It's that week in May when I gather a dozen fantasy experts (virtually, of course) to hold the annual Experts Draft and Experts Auction that run in our magazine each year. Both went off with only a minor hitch or two, although the guy doing both from England until 4 a.m. his time might feel differently. Some of the highlights:  more »

Andy Richardson: Fear Not

It's fantasy draft week. I think; I'm basing this on when most of my drafts, my friends' drafts, the ones I'm hearing about are taking place. In a regular season, the only exhibition game left would be the one no starters dress for. It's the week you lay the groundwork for the season. Don't screw it up.   more »

Andy Richardson: First Draft of the Year! (Part 2)

Yesterday I posted my results from the first half of a best-ball draft. To recap, I came out of it with 2 QBs, 5 RBs, 4 WRs and 3 TEs. In a typical league you'd finish with a kicker and a defense and that would be the end. But this goes 28 rounds and there are no transactions all season, so we're only halfway done.   more »

Andy Richardson: First Draft of the Year!

I participated in my first fantasy draft of the season last week. Over the last two weeks, actually; it was a slow draft where participants had 2 hours to make each pick. I don't recommend drafting this early, but it was a cheap enough entry fee and a chance to see some early takes on players.   more »

Andy Richardson: Let's Draft!

It's a big week of fantasy drafts. There won't be any key starters or backups playing in the remaining preseason games, at least none you actually want to select, so you're probably fine to take whoever you want. I have a big money draft on Wednesday, an auction on Saturday, and probably a few other leagues that I'll find my way into the next few days.   more »

Mock Draft: Experts Draft Tidbits

We held the annual Experts Draft for our magazine last night. I'm not going to spoil the whole thing -- ya gotta buy the magazine, or at least skim through it in the store -- but it's a slow news day, so I thought I'd share some of the highlights.   more »

Ask the Experts: What advice would you give someone entering their draft?

ASK THE EXPERTS appears weekly from training camp through the Super Bowl with answers to a new question being posted Thursday morning. How the guest experts responded when we asked them: What advice would you give a friend on the eve of their fantasy draft?  more »

Andy Richardson: First draft of the year!

I had my first fantasy draft of the year last night, one of four I'll be doing this week. Unbelievably, I've landed the No. 9 spot in three of them, with the fourth yet to be determined. No Todd Gurley for me. On the bright side, the early-round lessons from one draft can be applied to the others. Thought I'd share some of what I learned -- or at least, think I learned -- from last night.   more »

Andy Richardson: Time to Draft

I've been thinking about when the best time is to hold a fantasy draft lately. Maybe it's because I haven't actually scheduled drafts for either of the leagues I run yet, and I really ought to get around to doing that. I've long believed that later is better; less chance of a key performer getting hurt. But now I'm not so sure.   more »
