Factoid: Chargers WR

The Chargers don’t have Keenan Allen anymore. Mike Williams is also gone. Some new receiver, it seems, is going to have to rise up to relevancy in that offense.   more »

Ian Allan: Quentin Johnston

At what point do you give up on a struggling first-round pick? Quentin Johnston, as a recent example, had an underwhelming rookie season. Are we at the point where you’d rather trade him out for a receiver selected in the second or third round of the upcoming draft?   more »

Chargers WR Williams out for season with torn ACL

The Los Angeles Chargers will be without wide receiver MIKE WILLIAMS for the remainder of the season due to a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee. Williams was injuredMore after making a catch late in the third quarter of Sunday’s game against the Minnesota Vikings. An MRI scan on Williams’ left knee revealed the extent of the injury. With Williams out for the remainder of the season, the Chargers are expected to rely more on rookie first-round draft pick QUENTIN JOHNSTON and JOSHUA PALMER alongside veteran KEENAN ALLEN. Less

Factoid: Catch a rising star

With the 2008 numbers in front of me, I see that DeSean Jackson saw 28 targets in August that year, catching 16 passes for 189 yards. It underscores that teams (other than the Baltimore Ravens) aren’t as willing to risk putting their key players on the field for preseason games.   more »

Chargers WR Johnston slipping down depth chart?

Los Angeles Chargers rookie wide receiver QUENTIN JOHNSTON has reportedly slid to fourth on the depth chart behind fellow wideouts KEENAN ALLEN, MIKE WILLIAMS, and JOSHUA PALMER. The Chargers drafted JohnstonMore with the 21st overall pick hoping he could become a big play threat in Kellen Moore’s offense. Instead, Johnston has reportedly struggled with drops while Palmer has been a regular playmaker in training camp and earned the trust of quarterback JUSTIN HERBERT and the coaching staff. Take note, fantasy owners. Less

Factoid: Rookie receivers

I am not a fan of the rookie receivers. I think it’s going to be a down year for them. But that said, they’re tending to do more earlier than they have in the past.   more »

Chargers OC Moore likes WR height advantage

New Los Angeles Chargers offensive coordinator Kellen Moore said recently that he is excited about his team’s versatility on offense, and he seems particularly enthusiastic about the height of his passMore catchers. Moore said that “we’ve got so much height on this team, we’re going to be throwing in a different jet stream”. From 6’8” tight end DONALD PARHAM to 6’4” rookie wide receiver QUENTIN JOHNSTON and 6’2” veteran wideout KEENAN ALLEN (among others), the Chargers should have guys that can go up and catch the jump balls coming their way from star quarterback JUSTIN HERBERT. Factoid: First-round wideouts

Minnesota first-rounder Jordan Addison is missing time at offseason training activities due to an undisclosed minor injury. This is not a big deal; it's still May, for a few more hours. But it seems as good a time as any to point out that a rookie impact can't be taken for granted.   more »

Factoid: Rookie WRs

Rookie receivers have been on the upswing in recent years. They’ve been able to become notable contributors earlier, with guys like JaMarr Chase and Justin Jefferson leading the way. But I don’t see one of those guys this year.   more »

Factoid: First-round wideouts

The top-end players at wide receiver weren't viewed as favorably as in other recent years. A year ago, for example, six wide receivers were selected in the top 18 picks, with three going at 10-11-12. Last night the first wideout, Ohio State's Jaxon Smith-Njigba (pictured), barely snuck into the top 20.   more »

Seahawks draft Smith-Njigba, first WR taken in 2023 NFL Draft

The Seattle Seahawks made Ohio State wide receiver JAXON SMITH-NJIGBA the first wideout selected on Thursday night with the 20th overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. Smith-Njigba had a dynamicMore 2021 season before playing just three games in 2022 because of a hamstring injury. The pick started a run at the wide receiver position with Smith-Njigba being immediately followed by fellow wideouts QUENTIN JOHNSTON (Los Angeles Chargers), ZAY FLOWERS (Baltimore Ravens), and JORDAN ADDISON (Minnesota Vikings). Factoid: Quentin Johnston

Quentin Johnston gets tossed about as likely to be one of the first receivers off the board, but he played at Texas Christian, and that makes me nervous. They don’t seem to play much defense in the Big 12, and that’s led to some players from that conference being overdrafted.  more »
