Factoid: Khalil Shakir

It's Bills and former Bills wide receiver week here, and I thought I'd take a look at Khalil Shakir. What are the chances he's poised for a Year 3 breakout? There are some encouraging signs.   more »

Factoid: Rookie receivers

It wasn’t supposed to be a strong year for rookie wide receivers. Then the season happened, with Puka Nacua leading the way and Zay Flowers, Rashee Rice and Jordan Addison not far behind.   more »

Factoid: Rookie receivers

I think I need to be more open to drafting rookie wide receivers earlier. Every year we’re seeing about 3 finish with top-30 numbers.   more »

Factoid: Fast starters

It’s just one week, but those were nice debuts for Zay Flowers and Puka Nacua. They’re rookie receivers, but they combined to see 25 targets in their first games.   more »

Factoid: Rookie receivers

I am not a fan of the rookie receivers. I think it’s going to be a down year for them. But that said, they’re tending to do more earlier than they have in the past.   more »

Factoid: First-round wideouts

Minnesota first-rounder Jordan Addison is missing time at offseason training activities due to an undisclosed minor injury. This is not a big deal; it's still May, for a few more hours. But it seems as good a time as any to point out that a rookie impact can't be taken for granted.   more »

Around the NFL: Rashod Bateman

I'm not sure I'm in on Rashod Bateman. The former first-rounder is entering his third season and might be Baltimore's top wideout, but there's not a great track record to latch onto. He's appeared in just 18 of a possible 34 games his first two seasons.   more »

Factoid: Rookie WRs

Rookie receivers have been on the upswing in recent years. They’ve been able to become notable contributors earlier, with guys like JaMarr Chase and Justin Jefferson leading the way. But I don’t see one of those guys this year.   more »

Around the NFL: Zay Flowers

If form holds, there will be some notable rookie pass catchers. In the last 10 years, 35 wide receivers have finished with top-40 numbers in their first season. But I don’t think Zay Flowers is going to be one of those guys.   more »

Factoid: First-round wideouts

The top-end players at wide receiver weren't viewed as favorably as in other recent years. A year ago, for example, six wide receivers were selected in the top 18 picks, with three going at 10-11-12. Last night the first wideout, Ohio State's Jaxon Smith-Njigba (pictured), barely snuck into the top 20.   more »

Seahawks draft Smith-Njigba, first WR taken in 2023 NFL Draft

The Seattle Seahawks made Ohio State wide receiver JAXON SMITH-NJIGBA the first wideout selected on Thursday night with the 20th overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. Smith-Njigba had a dynamicMore 2021 season before playing just three games in 2022 because of a hamstring injury. The pick started a run at the wide receiver position with Smith-Njigba being immediately followed by fellow wideouts QUENTIN JOHNSTON (Los Angeles Chargers), ZAY FLOWERS (Baltimore Ravens), and JORDAN ADDISON (Minnesota Vikings). Factoid: Zay Flowers

Quarterback size is a popular pre-draft discussion, but teams are also thinking about wide receivers in this regard. Most of the wideouts selected in the top 10 picks in recent years are at least 6 feet tall; Drake London, Garrett Wilson, JaMarr Chase and DeVonta Smith the last two years all measured 6-0 to 6-4 at the combine. Will a smaller player break the mold this year?   more »

Factoid: Rookie wideouts

Pass-happy schemes. Offense-friendly rule changes. Up-tempo college offenses. The 17-game season. Plenty of reasons, but the result is that rookie wide receivers are putting up bigger numbers than ever before.   more »
